New VRF Technology Comes to Home Air Conditioning

LG Multi-V Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) Mini Slit Air Conditioner

I prefer to compare the difference in air conditioners to automobiles.  Imagine if your auto only had two options, off or full power.  It would be very inefficient and downright dangerous.  This is exactly how most conventional air conditioners work.

New air conditioning technology has given us variable capacity air conditioners.  Much like an accelerator in your automobile, it will only use just the needed power of the engine to get the job done efficiently.  In place of using the foot to move the gas pedal, your air conditioner would read the desired set temperature on the thermostat and the air conditioners logic decides how much capacity is needed to cool the area controlled by that unit from 100% to 20%.  Both the indoor air handler and outdoor compressor units run at the required speed – no more and no less that what is needed.  Basically, if only a small amount of power is needed to do the job, that is exactly what is requested by the logic board.  The results are many.  The temperature in a given space is maintained precisely, the system runs much quieter, the system uses much less energy, fans run at slower speeds and humidity levels are much more constant.

There is literally no down side other than the increased upfront cost, but this is offset by the reduced energy consumption over time. Using FPL’s energy cost charts, we can predict a complete return on your investment in 4-6 years.

Once you have experienced living with the new fully variable speed air conditioners you will find it difficult to live with any conventional singe speed unit.
